SECFS – Our Caregivers
Alternative Care Department
An important component of SECFS is the Alternative Care Department. The Agency commits to providing our children who are not able to stay with their own families with the best placement available, whether it is for an emergency, temporary, or long-term stay. In order to make this a realistic goal, our training for the Agency’s Caregivers, whether as foster parents, specialized treatment home house parents, support workers, or respite workers, is now more culturally-relevant. Our Caregiver Training Manual reflects the culture of the First Nations the Agency serves, and highly qualified Anishinaabe trainers are being utilized to ensure the information is being transmitted or learned in a culturally sensitive setting.
The Alt Care Dept is responsible to seek new Caregivers, provide support to existing Caregivers, provide Caregiver training, and is responsible to complete the necessary background checks and home licensing requirements.
The number of specialized placement homes, long- or short-term, or emergency placement resources in the remote communities has seen an increase. There are three new placement units in Pauingassi First Nation and two new units in Little Grand Rapids First Nations. Plus, both communities saw new staffing units built to enable qualified staff to work in these communities while the Agency concurrently implements its strategy to train local community members, who will assume greater roles in the caring of their children.
At the off-reserve or urban level, the Agency is focussing on increasing the number of extended families providing emergency, short, or longer term care for their relative children. The recent initiative of kinship care homes standard implemented by the Southern First Nations Network of Care has inspired the Agency to concentrate on seeking extended family or community members to provide care for its children. There is also an initiative underway whereby the Agency will be more visible with actively recruiting Aboriginal foster parents in the non-mainstream venues i.e. Aboriginal training centres, community centres, post-secondary institutions, Aboriginal organizations, and the Agency website.
Southeast Child and Family Services offers a variety of options for committed Caregivers to care for our children.
Emergency Placements: A child or sibling group requires an immediate but temporary placement.
Kinship Care: A child or sibling group is able to be placed with extended family or community members.
Foster Home: A child or sibling group requires a temporary or long-term placement.
Specialized Treatment Home: A child or youth requires additional support and specialized training by the Caregiver. These Homes may be located in urban, rural, or on the First Nation community. These Homes are operated by Shawenim Abinoojii Inc. in partnership with the SECFS Alt Care Dept.
Support Workers: Individuals interested with providing support services to Caregivers are encouraged to call the Shawenim Abinoojii Inc. Support Worker Program.
